Mile 22

Mile 22 was founded in 2009 by Mike McDaniel in Monterey, California. Before launching the brand, Mike managed a surf camp in Mexico, handled global sales for a snowboard company, and was a partner, copywriter and account executive for a micro-agency in San Francisco's East Bay specializing in advertising, marketing and design for the board- and action-sports industries. Mike has ridden snowboards since they were called Snurfers, has surfed for three decades, and took up prone and stand-up paddleboarding 15 years ago to tighten up and blow off steam. Today Mike paddles regularly between Pebble Beach and Monterey and schemes to take Hamilton—the family cat—surfing.

After watching his friend side hustle for years, in 2018 Harold McGruther bought into Mike's Mile 22 dream with money earned as a jack-of-all-trades in the bicycle, motorcycle and advertising games. An inveterate tinkerer and raconteur, McGruther smooth-talked Mike into fine-tuning a pair of Monster straps at a factory that specializes in ballistic-grade cut-and-sew products; everything from backpacks to bivy sacks. It’s an organic partnership they expect to grow, and have fun along the way.

Today, Mile 22 products like our Monster Straps and Monster Loops benefit from Mike and McGoo's combined 75 years of design and manufacturing experience, and decades of testing in the real world. Trust us when we say it… Mile 22 products work WAY HARDER than the company's founders ever will.
